Rationale

This project explores the intersection of geometric abstraction and realistic, enticing visual effects. Inspired by the diagonal composition of the reference work, my design expands on this concept by incorporating multiple perspectives that combining a top-down view of the frying pan with a side view of the stacked burger. This dual-perspective approach ensures visual clarity and depth even where elements overlap, creating a subtle sense of spatial layering.

The work employs the principle of "movement," presented through a deconstructed, stacked burger design. While the reference work uses floating spices like cilantro and steam, my work uses swirling cheese sauce and suspended onions to guide the viewer's eye, ultimately focusing on the sizzling patty. This creates a sense of emphasis, where the fine geometric details of the "gloss" and liquid texture contrast sharply with the overall broad shape of the burger.

The work uses warm red-orange tones, accented with emerald green, employing color psychology to stimulate appetite. The background uses minimalist square lines, reminiscent of a tray liner, adding ambiance without cluttering the image. Finally, a halftone grain filter is applied to introduce a retro aesthetic, cleverly blending modern flat vector graphics with retro commercial illustrations.

Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

This module provided a comprehensive review of fundamental design principles. I discovered that concepts like Geometry Theory are far more intricate than I initially realized. While it is challenging to apply every single principle to one piece of work, this module has planted the seeds of knowledge. I now possess a mental map of professional design standards that I can revisit and implement as my craft evolves.

What did I enjoy the most?

I most enjoyed the holistic process of bringing a vision to life, from the initial hand-drawn sketches to the final digital execution. I found that having a clear reference or "rule set" actually fueled my creativity rather than restricting it. Navigating the workflow of brainstorming, sourcing references, and switching between design tools allowed me to remain deeply focused and engaged.

What did I not enjoy the most?

The aspect I struggled with most was traditional note-taking from lecture slides. I believe true mastery comes through application; transcribing professional definitions felt repetitive when the original PDFs were already comprehensive. I found it difficult to paraphrase complex theories I hadn't yet fully "owned" through practice, leading me to prioritize high-quality professional sources over my own early-stage interpretations.

What have I learnt about myself?

I have come to terms with the reality of finite time. I realized that I cannot, and should not try to master every single detail of every subject simultaneously. I learned the importance of prioritization: focusing my energy on understanding the core, practical principles that I can apply immediately, rather than overwhelming myself with exhaustive perfectionism.

What has changed (and what has not) in my learning journey?

My innate love for artistic expression remains unchanged; I still naturally gravitate toward "Art Mode," chasing aesthetics and hidden meanings. However, my approach has evolved. I am learning to distinguish between pure art and functional design. While I don't force a total separation, I have become much faster at identifying when I am drifting too far into aesthetics and pivoting back to the practical goals of the brief.

What are my aspirations?

My ultimate dream is to be a storyteller: a writer or an illustrator. While I recognize that this is a passion I am still nurturing, I intend to use my practical strengths in design, aesthetics, and adaptability to contribute value to society first. By building a career on what I am skilled at, I will create the stability and trust needed to eventually support and fulfill my creative dreams.
